Na Bolom Cultural Center Guide
Na Bolom: A Journey into Mayan Culture and History Guide
Na Bolom, meaning "House of the Jaguar" in the Tzotzil Mayan language, is more than just a museum; it's a cultural center, a guesthouse, and a living testament to the dedication of Frans Blom and Gertrude Duby Blom to the indigenous cultures and environment of Chiapas. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the rich history and traditions of the Mayan people, while also learning about the ongoing efforts to preserve their heritage and the surrounding rainforest. It's a unique and enriching experience that offers a deeper understanding of this fascinating region. The story of Na Bolom is intertwined with the lives of its founders. Frans Blom, a Danish archaeologist, and Gertrude Duby Blom, a Swiss journalist and environmentalist, dedicated their lives to studying and protecting the Mayan people and the Lacandon rainforest. They established Na Bolom in 1950 as a research center and a place to document and preserve Mayan culture. Gertrude, in particular, became a fierce advocate for the Lacandon Maya, documenting their traditions, fighting for their land rights, and working to protect the rainforest they called home. The house itself is a former monastery, adding to its historical significance. At Na Bolom, you can explore the museum's collection of Mayan artifacts, photographs, and textiles, gaining insights into the history, beliefs, and daily lives of the indigenous people. Take a guided tour to learn more about the Blom's work and the ongoing projects of the center. Participate in workshops on traditional Mayan crafts, such as weaving or pottery. Enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant, which serves traditional Chiapanecan cuisine. You can also stay overnight in one of the guesthouse rooms, experiencing the unique atmosphere of Na Bolom firsthand.
